How did that sponsored ad show up in my Facebook news feed?

Facebook recently added a new feature for people to promote their ads. It’s called “Promoted Post for Brand Pages.”
Did you know that most fan pages have a 16% view rate? While this may seem low, email marketing is 5% to 10% less on average.
Did you also know that fan pages are now being called “Brand Pages?” Well, Facebook has changed the name of these pages, and now for just $5 your brand page can have much higher visibility among those who have “liked” your page.
My reason for mentioning this is because I saw a sponsored ad pop up in my news feed a few weeks ago for auto insurance. I thought it was odd, because it was the first time I had seen a sponsored ad show up in my news feed. Normally, ads are placed within the right side bar column, swallowed up among all the other ads. When I tried to hide the ad from my news feed, I couldn’t find any options to do it. While I was a little annoyed that the ad showed up in my news feed and I couldn’t remove it, it obviously got my attention. If Facebook offered their new ad placement with the ability to target an audience, then this new feature would have a much higher ROI. For example, had the ad been about great clothing or shoe deals, I would have clicked on it right away.
