Wanted: Someone to Read my Blog

So you wanna be a blogger? Welcome to the rest of the world; we’ve missed you. These days, blogs are to the internet what water is to the Earth; necessary and everywhere. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry with a Blogger or Tumblr account has their own blog with seemingly millions of followers and comments for each post. Additionally, it has become a best practice for businesses to have a company blog with regular updates. It’s easy to get people to read your blog if it’s about celebrities, sports, or fashion but what about those of us who have to write blogs for plaster companies or doorstop makers? Even if you do somehow make these topics engaging, how do you get people to read your blog? You can be the best writer on the planet and have the most beautifully designed site ever but nobody will ever see it if you don’t actively promote it.
Therefore, I’ve compiled a list of places you should market your blog after each post. Creating awareness is key.
- Social Media: Post it on your Facebook page, fanpage, and promote it in an ad if your budget allows. Tweet the link 2-3 times to keep it in people’s newsfeeds. Make sure you’re putting pictures in your posts so you can pin your posts in a Pinterest blog board. You can also post it on Linkedin if it’s professional and posting it on Google+ will help it get ranked in Google.
- Bookmarking Sites: Create a Stumbleupon account and stumble your posts. Same with Digg, Delicious, and my personal favorite: Reddit. Reddit isn’t called the front page of the internet for nothing and if your post gets upvoted enough, your content will be viral within hours because of the enormous user base! Technorati is the top search engine for blogs only so it’s also worth looking into.
- Contacts: E-mail your post to your relevant contacts; the worst that could happen is that they delete it, the best that could happen is that they like what they see and start following your blog. Share your posts with any forums or online groups you belong to (G+ circles anyone?). Everyone’s a critic, so send your latest posts to friends and ask them to critique it for you honestly; people love voicing negative feedback.
- Other blogs: Comment on relevant blogs thoughtfully and include a link to your blog. Try not to sound like a spam-bot. Rewrite one of your articles and submit it as a guest post on a relevant blog. You can also go the pity route and just ask bloggers who are more relevant than you to link to your blog. Sometimes they will feel kind and do this, especially if your content is great.
The old adage: “if you write it, they will come” is true no longer. If you want your blog to get read, people have to know it exists. Social media makes sharing content foolproof and free so there really is no excuse anymore. The ball is in your court so get moving!
Feel free to try one of these methods and leave a comment with your blog link here.
