The Importance of Domain Name Ownership

Unlike some of our competition, here at Infinity Dental Web, we always encourage our clients to own their own domain names. For those who aren’t very familiar with the technical aspects of owning and hosting domain names, they are two very different things. For technical reasons we almost always host our clients’ websites, utilizing the most effective means for speeding up our workflow and the websites themselves. However, the process of hosting a domain name just requires the pointing of the “nameservers” to our hosting location, all the while leaving the domain name with its native registrar where it was purchased. An example of a registrar could be Godaddy.com, domains.com, bluehost.com, etc. A domain name can be purchased and controlled at any number of hosting or domain sites and still be hosted at another location.
The main advantage of keeping the domain name under your control is your ability to retain your brand name and not be subject to another company holding your domain name “hostage.” So when looking into web marketing companies, it would be wise to refrain from going into business with companies who require control of your domain name. This may not seem like a big deal if your site is brand new and you haven’t had much time and money into developing authority for your domain name pagerank and solidifying it’s place near the top of Google. But once you have, the last thing you want is to be extorted in order for you to regain ownership of the domain and move on if you choose to do so.
We’ve run into this issue frequently with clients switching over from some of our competitors. We attempt to get the process moving but run into roadblocks, 15-day waiting periods, and other bureaucratic hoops to jump through, most of which could be avoided by owning the domain name outright.
