So Many Changes, So Little Time

Being immersed in Facebook, Google, and Twitter all day means that you’re going to notice any little change they make as an alteration in your world. Facebook especially has been making small tweaks to it’s user-experience in the last two to three weeks with the biggest one being the universal roll out of Graphsearch, which we’ve covered extensively in previous posts. Here is a list of some of the minor changes I’ve noticed in the past few weeks.
The “Top Comments” Filter
If you manage a business page, you’ve had to notice one of the new features they added to comments; the filtering of comments by which ones have the most activity. This takes a page right out of Reddit’s book, where comments can be either up or down-voted with the most up-voted appearing first. You still have the ability to view comments the old way by clicking on “Top Comments” and reverting back to “Recent Activity”. I like having top comments show up first because it makes it easier for me to quickly see what the important things being said about my posts are without having to scroll down.
Comment Photos
This option just became available in the past few days and let’s you attach a picture to your comment. This is something that both Reddit and Twitter have already had for a long time. Since photos are the currency of social media, answering a photo with a photo can be an easy and interesting way to start a conversation.
Starred Recommendations for Places
Something else that rolled out a few weeks ago for Places pages is starred recommendations. For some reason, not all of the pages I manage have this option. Recommendations used to be available on every local business page but now, recommendations have either disappeared or come with the nifty 5 star recommendation button. I think this is a glitch within Facebook. Starred reviews are always a good thing (if the review is a good one) because people can easily see at first glance what the general opinion of the public is.
Starred Posts for Admins
This next change is visible only if you are a page admin. Facebook has started to highlight and star posts that they consider are doing particularly well in your admin notification box. Posts that are doing well get a star put in front of them and are highlighted a yellow-beige color. When you go on a page with a starred post, a Facebook box pops up and tells you that post is doing better than others and asks you if you want to “boost” the post by promoting it. I think this is just an annoying way Facebook is trying to get more money because some of the posts it says are doing “better” than most are actually reaching the same number or people as every other one. It’s like they just randomly pick one and ask you to promote it.
