Is your social media marketing on the toilet?
Date: December 4, 2012Category: Author: David Hall
Not “in the toilet,” but “on the toilet.” Meaning, “Are your patients networking with you from the bathroom?”
Some of them probably are. The marketing firms Nielsen and NM Incite released a study yesterday that reports that 32% of Americans aged 18 to 24 use social networking in the bathroom.
Also in the study was a finding that 51% of adults from age 25 to 34 are networking socially in the office.
You just never know the impact of what you may be doing with your online marketing. While your intentions are absolutely noble, the unintended consequences could be that you are creating a line outside the bathroom while people are waiting for your patient to respond to your tweet. Or it’s entirely possible that you might be contributing to declining workplace productivity.
On a serious note, it makes me reflect on the excitement I felt after I published my first dental practice website in 1995, in the very early days of the Internet. The excitement came when I learned the far-reaching impact of what I published. People around the world could read what I wrote. One of the first links I got was from a library in the country of Jordan. It dazzled me to think of all the places and environments where my writing could be read. And now, in 2012, we’re being read in bathrooms. Who’d have ever thought?
