Happy Birthday World Wide Web!

This week was the 25th birthday of the World Wide Web…or so Google was claiming. While the Internet is here to stay, the future of it seems to be as unpredictable as any 25 year old’s. The Federal Communications Commission continues to debate net neutrality. And the amount of information on the World Wide Web is only going to grow, and grow fast!
Everyone seems to be clamoring for attention via the Internet even though there is room for everyone and anyone who wants a web presence. And unfortunately there is even a fair amount of unwanted attention that ends up online. The trick is (and will continue to be) how to get the right kind of attention, the right way. In the end, every business needs to consider what their strategy for an online presence is going to be. Anymore, your web space may be as important as your office space. It’s definitely worth taking a minute to assess your relationship with the Internet. Here are a few areas to help you get started:
- Consider your website’s presence. It is often the first impression of your business for the consumer.
- What is your social media strategy? Do you think your customers want to be engaged by your business or do they just need an outlet to familiarize themselves with your business philosophy or with you as a service provider?
- Do you feel threatened by the self-publishing power of consumers as they turn to the Internet to review or report on their experience with your business? Do you understand the review process and websites who operate in the consumer review space?
- Are you familiar with the information databases available to business owners? Are you utilizing them?
These are just a few areas to think about as you assess your on-line presence and activity as a business owner. The web may be 25 years old, but there seems to be no end to the ways it affects the environment in which we live and do business. It makes sense to stop and think about where you are in your relationship with good old WWW.
