The Growing Power of Social Media Marketing

Social Media Marketing is becoming much more effective than it used to be.

About 15 years ago, social media was seen by dentists as a tool for engaging your patients online by creating an online community for them. After we started offering this service, we did a study that showed that patients who engaged with you online tended to spend more in your practice—apparently more readily accepting treatment recommendations and choosing optional services. We also found that they were more active referrers. This resulted in modest benefits for the practice.

Social media marketing, however, has grown beyond that and has become a powerful tool for reaching out to new patients. While effectively harnessing these tools requires some expertise, online groups, influencers, and targeted paid advertising all provide opportunities for bringing in significant numbers of new patients. And then, most recently, artificial intelligence engines are pulling information about your practice from social media.

Basic Engagement

First, I want to make the point that there is still a role for a basic engagement strategy. Even though stronger tools are available, there is still value in cultivating an online community. But in 2026, there are new approaches to this strategy. The way social media algorithms are currently structured, your posts will have more reach if you have a minimum of 3 quality posts per week. Consistent posting increases the likelihood that your content will appear in followers’ feeds, which improves engagement, brand awareness, and website traffic.

Also, since artificial intelligence engines are using the information you post, posts should be answering the questions being asked of these AI engines. We have developed a tool to determine these questions, and are using them to create posts.

Posts are also being pulled into your Google Business Profile, which adds to their importance. They should contain significant information about your practice—your services, techniques, and patient care.

Social Media Advertising

Moving on to more powerful social media tools, let’s talk about social media advertising. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram allow dental practices to target users by location, age, interests, and even life events such as weddings or relocations. This level of precision, if managed well, can be used to market specific services such as cosmetic dentistry, clear aligners, or implants. These platforms also provide real-time performance data, allowing marketers to refine messaging and budgets for maximum return on investment.

The caveat here is that managing social media ads is very challenging, even for people who consider themselves social media experts. Facebook and Instagram ads are managed through the Meta Business Dashboard. There are powerful tools available through this dashboard, but there is a steep learning curve to truly harness their power. Navigation in the dashboard is confusing. Common issues are:

  • Dealing with account permissions
  • Deciphering performance data
  • Frequent changes
  • Rejected ads with vague explanations.

Complicating this matter, getting the right personnel can be a challenge. Applicants for social media marketing positions can easily create the false impression that they know how to manage these tools.

Working with Influencers

Influencers can also help you get new patients, though the results here aren’t as predictable as advertising. Influencers can increase brand awareness quickly, drive targeted traffic, and generate compelling content that can be repurposed. However, working with influencers also presents challenges, including limited control over messaging, difficulty verifying audience authenticity and engagement quality, and unpredictable performance. Costs need to be negotiated with the influencer, and it can be difficult to measure clear ROI. Again, dental practices will benefit from expert help here.

Working with Online Groups

Unlike influencers, online social media groups won’t charge money. Working with these groups can be highly effective because these communities are built around shared interests, which means your message reaches a more targeted and engaged audience. Groups often foster strong trust and peer-to-peer interaction, so recommendations and educational content can carry more credibility than traditional ads. However, many communities have strict rules about promotions, and moderators will control access and content approval. Success typically requires consistent participation, authenticity, and relationship-building rather than direct selling, which requires a level of skill and patience from your social media manager.

Conclusion

As competition in dental marketing continues to grow, social media offers practices a powerful combination of reach, targeting, and authenticity. Those that strategically leverage paid ads, influencers, and online communities are well positioned to attract patients and build lasting brands in an increasingly digital healthcare landscape.

  1. I feel like advertising for a business in 2026 starts with social and website and then other methods live in the lower priorities. Time they are a changin.
