Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg finally laid waste to rumors last week that Facebook’s next big launch would be a Facebook phone. On April 4th, Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would not be producing physical phones. What they are doing is partnering with HTC to bring a Facebook phone experience to the consumer through revolutionary software.
This Android-powered software is best described as a family of apps designed to bring your Facebook content straight to you, rather than requiring you to constantly check your apps. The HTC First is only phone Facebook Home will be pre-loaded on, though the product will soon become available for download on other Android phones including the popular Samsung Galaxy III.
According to reviews, the experience with the pre-loaded HTC First is that of a Facebook phone, with the device even powering up with the Facebook logo. In this product, Facebook has effectively created a Facebook phone without actually building any hardware. The user experience is said to be elegantly designed and addicting to those who already spend significant time on Facebook.
This humble blogger wonders how long it will take for the Home feed to feature more advertisements than posts from friends. If Home catches on, this should prove extremely profitable for Facebook. Every company is going to want to display ads in a device that is constantly being monitored by their consumer. And with Facebook’s targeting capabilities, the ads will already be targeted to reach the right people at the right time. It appears that the Facebook takeover is still in progress.
