It’s hard enough being a good dentist. It’s even harder to become an accredited cosmetic dentist by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Mike Szarek must like to do hard things because he has now achieved this outstanding accomplishment. Any dentist seeking this Accreditation must pass through a rigorous three-part process which consists of:
• A written examination
• Clinical case submissions for examination
• An oral examination
Each of these parts must be completed in sequence, meaning that you may not move onto the next part until the prior step is passed successfully. The entire process can take up to 5 years to complete.
The written examination focuses on all disciplines of dentistry, but places great emphasis on subjects that have a special relevance to aesthetics. Some of the subjects covered in the examination may include:
• Smile design
• Photography
• Orthodontics
• Periodontics
• Implants
• Adhesion
• Materials
• Posterior aesthetic restorations
Also, some of the questions specifically deal with various scenarios revolving around specific clinical cases that have to do with cosmetic dentistry.
According to AACD’s site, “The Accreditation Clinical Case Examinations are the core of the Accreditation process.” This makes sense since the results achieved for a cosmetic patient is really what accreditation is all about.
For more information about the accreditation process, please visit the AACD’s current (2012) requirements overview
Because I have been through an extensive cosmetic dental process myself, I can especially appreciate the value of having an accredited AACD cosmetic dentist to work with. There is an extra level of confidence and trust that goes a long way in setting the patient (myself in this case) at ease.
You can see the announcement of the 2013 Accreditation recipients which includes Dr. Szarek here.
Once again, a huge congratulations to Dr. Szarek for his tremendous accomplishment.
