Upholding the Reputation of the Tooth Fairy

The tooth fairy is an old legend many of us grew up believing in. As adults, keeping the fantasy alive for our children not only creates positive childhood memories, but inspires them to use their imaginations. My daughter recently lost her tooth, and I wanted to share her creative tooth fairy story.
“Time to get up” I said to my daughter as I turned on the lights and woke her up to get ready for school. Just as she quickly leaped out of bed, I had remembered she had lost her tooth the night before. Sure enough she looked right under her pillow, only to find that the tooth fairy did not come. How did I let that one slip by? Her tooth had fallen onto the floor in the middle of the night, so I played it off as if the tooth fairy must not have been able to find it. We put her tooth in a plastic case and back under her pillow only to try again the next night.
Before she went to bed, she decided to write the tooth fairy a note and create a space that she was sure not to miss. She got out a large white board, and started to write; “Tooth fairy, can you please make all my Smurf’s come to life and make two batches of smurfs. Can you please make one batch with the smurfs that have different names. If you do this thank you. Love – Jaelyn”. Then she began to set up every Smurf she could find and set the plastic case with the tooth right in the center. She turned on the hallway light to make sure the tooth fairy would be able to read her letter, then jumped into bed. She was so excited for the next morning that she fell right asleep.
Now I was determined not to mess this up a second time, but how would I handle her special requests? I replaced the tooth with the money, sprinkled some fairy dust around her smurfs, and sat down to write her a letter. “Dear Jaelyn, Thank you so much for the shiny white tooth. It will be a wonderful addition to my collection. I would love to be able to make your Smurfs come to life but I’m afraid Gargamell may find them. I will make a special batch hidden in the forest near my castle just for you, and name them after all of your favorite things. I’ve left behind a gift in exchange for your tooth. Until next time – The Tooth Fairy.” The next morning I watched as she cautiously walked towards her Smurf’s. There was a brief moment of disappointment as she realized her Smurf’s had not come to life, but then she began to read her letter. Her eyes lit up and with a big smile on her face, she jumped up in excitement to share with me that she was going to have her own village of Smurfs. I can’t wait to see what she thinks of the next time she loses a tooth!
