- 1991 – Published landmark research on tooth whitening, “Should etching be performed as a part of a vital bleaching technique?” Quintessence International, September 1991. In this widely quoted research, he established that the then prevalent practice of etching teeth prior to bleaching them was unnecessary. In accomplishing this research, he invented the split-arch technique for evaluating bleaching effectiveness, a technique that has since been widely copied.

- 1994-97 – Founded and chaired “Friends of the AACD,” an organization within the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry that reformed and restructured the AACD, in response to serious internal conflicts that threatened to destroy the organization. To help accomplish that, he launched a newsletter, Academy Open Forum, that helped mobilize the reform effort.
