  • 1965 – National Math Contest Award – top ten scores among high school students in Minnesota
  • 1966 – National Merit Scholar
  • 1966 – Minneapolis district high school debate championship (as a member of the 4-person team) and best speaker award (as an individual award)
  • 1966 – Bausch & Lomb Science Award for his graduating class at Washburn High School
  • 1966 – Paid organizer for Young Americans for Freedom for the state of Minnesota
  • 1967-69 – State chairman, Utah Young Americans for Freedom
  • 1968 – State chairman, Utah Youth for Nixon
  • 1969-71 – One of first six missionaries in Spain for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • 1973-75 – Member of the team that created the LDS edition of the Bible, with its expanded footnotes and accompanying topical guide
  • 1974 – B.S. in Chemistry and Secondary Education, Brigham Young University (Magna Cum Laude), with minors in math and physics
  • 1977-78 – Instructor, Radiology Department, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, while a student at the dental school
  • 1979 – D.D.S., University of Minnesota
  • 1979 – Elected to membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon (national dental honor fraternity)
  • 1979 – Award of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for being the most outstanding oral surgery student in his graduating class
  • 1990 – Became one of the first fifty dentists in the world to be accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
  • 1990-91 – Listed in Who’s Who in the Midwest
  • 1991 – Published landmark research on tooth whitening, “Should etching be performed as a part of a vital bleaching technique?” Quintessence International, September 1991. In this widely quoted research, he established that the then prevalent practice of etching teeth prior to bleaching them was unnecessary. In accomplishing this research, he invented the split-arch technique for evaluating bleaching effectiveness, a technique that has since been widely copied.
  • 1991-92 – Listed in Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America
  • 1992-96 – Director of Public Affairs for eastern Iowa, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he spearheaded LDS becoming influential in local interfaith organizations
  • 1993 – Spanish translation of above tooth whitening research published in Barcelona, Spain
  • 1994-95 – Chaired the first Public Relations Committee of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
  • 1994-97 – Founded and chaired “Friends of the AACD,” an organization within the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry that reformed and restructured the AACD, in response to serious internal conflicts that threatened to destroy the organization. To help accomplish that, he launched a newsletter, Academy Open Forum, that helped mobilize the reform effort.
  • 1994-95 – Listed in Who’s Who in Dentistry
  • 1995 – Published one of the first cosmetic dentistry websites. This site became mynewsmile.com and in 2006 it became the most highly trafficked cosmetic dentistry website on the internet
  • 1996 – Elected a Fellow, International Academy for Dental-Facial Esthetics
  • 1997-2002 – Official cosmetic dentist of the Miss Iowa USA and Miss Teen Iowa USA pageants
  • 1998 – Published “Restoration of a shattered tooth,” Journal of the American Dental Association, January 1998
  • 1999-2000 – Listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare
  • 2000 – Listed in National Registry of Who’s Who
  • 2002 – Founded Mapletree Publishing Company
  • 2002 – Developed and published the LDS board game, Mortality
  • 2002 – Lecture at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, “Saving teeth with fractured roots.” He established that, contrary to the widely accepted idea that a vertical fracture in a tooth root made the tooth unrestorable, these teeth could be saved
  • 2003 – Published “Eliminating fear in dentistry,” Dental Economics, February 2003
  • 2003 – Launched mynewsmile.com as an international cosmetic dentist referral service
  • 2004 – Published “Restauração de dentes fraturados um estudo prolongado de 4 casos,” Revista Paulista de Odontologia, Janeiro/Febereiro 2004, jointly with Sergio A.M. Ourique, chairman of the Department of Prosthodontics, University of Sao Paulo
  • 2004 – Published “Restoration of fractured teeth, a long-term study,” Colorado Dental Journal, Fall 2004
